Coming soon!
We hope to feature some fun and informative maps of Rio de Janeiro for folks who enjoy the work of Machado. Through pinpointing locations in the settings of his novels and short stories, we'll offer a bit of a different touristic experience of the city, a way of walking through a 19th Century lens and accessing the evidence that Machado codified and documented about this city, his milieu, and the complex worlds it continues to host.
Stay tuned and check back again...
22 September 2013: Our first attempt at mapping Machado will be the based on the novel Dom Casmurro. I've added an embedded text in English (a preview of the novel) and also a link to a website that has 10 chapters translated into English, which you can access by clicking the tab above: Map 1: Dom Casmurro. For the full Portuguese text, click on the "PT" button on that page and you will find it.
19 January 2014: I've mapped the tour based on all of the locations mentioned in the novel Dom Casmurro. Click on the image itself, or on the button below the image to go to the Google map. The map is divided into three legs. Bentinho's childhood is marked with red circles. Important colonial era sites are marked with blue pins, and Bentinho and Capitu's adult life is marked with yellows stars.
21 August 2015: Looks like the coming months will allow me to return to this project. My esteemed colleague, Damien-Adia Marassa, is generating content for this site so that we can finish the first map on Dom Casmurro. In the works we have a complete English language text to link up, as well as the explanations and notes for each of the points I've already marked out on the map. In the meantime, check out the new Machado link at my other website: AfroRioWalkingTour.
